An European customer focuses on the production of rattan, which is mainly used to make home products such as rattan chairs, furniture, storage boxes and etc. The customer found us on the Internet, and looked through our official website, hoping to create a unique style for rattan products in home product design by introducing luminous elements.

 

The customer’s requirements are very clear: “I hope that rattan products can not only glow at night, but also maintain bright colors during the day”.After initial communication, we learned that the customer used PE and made rattan through extrusion. However, the customer’s original rattan products have different colors, and some are dark colors, such as wood nature color, dark blue, black and etc., which bring certain challenges to the performance of luminous effects.

 

The reason is, the glowing effect of the luminous powder is greatly affected by the color of the plastic substrate. Dark colors will cover the luminescence, which greatly reduces the luminous effect. In order to take into account the luminous effect and color design, our team immediately had in-depth communication with the customer, striving to find the best solution for him.

Customized Solutions: Different Color Layers Combination (Taking into account the luminous and color requirements)

After further discussion we understood the customer’s rattan production method which is using a two-layer extrusion process. This gave us a lot of inspiration. Based on this, we proposed two solutions to keep the luminous performance and colors at the same time.

1. Color + Luminous Combination:
The inner layer uses colored plastic, and the outer layer uses transparent plastic mixed with luminous powder or luminous masterbatch. This method can ensure that the color appearance can be seen during the day, and the luminous outer layer can fully display the luminous effect in the dark. At the same time, we also remind customers to use light colors as much as possible to avoid too much influence of dark colors on the luminous effect.
2. White + Luminous + Fluorescent Combination:
The inner layer uses white plastic, and the outer layer uses luminous powder or luminous masterbatch mixed with transparent plastic raw materials and a small amount of colorful fluorescent pigments. This not only maintains a certain color visual effect, but also makes the luminous effect of the outer layer more obvious, because the white of the inner layer has a certain reflective effect.

After determining the preliminary plan, the customer then considered about whether to use luminous powder or luminous masterbatch. From a cost perspective, luminous powder expense is definitely lower than that of luminous masterbatch, but considering the final glow effect, the dispersibility of luminous masterbatch is usually better than that of luminous powder.

After assessment, the customer decided to give priority to a good luminous effect, so he decided to use masterbatch. Based on this, we customized a PE luminous masterbatch with ultra-bright yellow-green color for him.During the customization, we consider the following three points when choosing which powder type should be used as raw material.

1. Choose Plastic-Specific Type, but not Normal Type
Normal luminous powder has a high particle hardness. When mixed with plastic, it is easy to produce significant friction, which will cause the finished luminous masterbatch to blacken, and ultimately affect the rattan’s luminous effect. The Plastic-Specific powder has a high lubricity after special treatment. During the application process, it can reduce friction to a certain extent, thereby reducing the blackening phenomenon and retaining the luminous effect to the highest extent.
2. Choose Ultra-High Brightness Grade with yellow-green color
When luminous is used with solid color, the solid color will reduce the naked eye’s perception of luminous to a certain extent. Both yellow-green and ultra-high brightness are the highest in terms of luminance. Choosing yellow-green of the ultra-high brightness grade can retain the luminous effect to the greatest extent.
Yellow-Green is the color with the highest brightness, and choose ultra-high grade, the combination can retain the luminous effect to the highest extent.
3. Choose the particle size of 20-30 microns
Luminous powder’s particle size is related with the thickness of the luminous layer wall of the rattan. Considering it is 0.3-0.5mm, we chose 20-30 micron particles accordingly. This can not only ensure the success of production, but also take into account the best luminous effect.
At the same time, we especially remind customers that although the plastic-specific luminous powder is used, it is still necessary to pay attention to reducing friction during the extrusion process. Once blackening occurs, the production equipment and process flow should be adjusted as much as possible. We provided customers with some reference methods to reduce friction, further helping customers to use luminous masterbatch smoothly and reduce problems in the production.

After a series of tests, the customer was quite pleased with our luminous masterbatch. He finally chose different addition ratio of 15%-20% and successfully produced various rattans with excellent luminous effects.
